Hora divides the day and night into planetary hours. Check the day Hora based on local sunrise-sunset for your city and date first, then choose a planet suited for your task. Mercury or Jupiter Hora is considered useful for business and meetings, Jupiter or Sun Hora for prayer, and Venus Hora for relationship or beauty-related work.
| Hora | Best For | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury Hora | Business, writing, education, communication | Hasty or unclear decisions |
| Jupiter Hora | Worship, advice, learning, financial planning | Arrogance or unverified investments |
| Venus Hora | Relationships, arts, shopping, beauty tasks | Overspending or emotional choices |

Thinking of taking a big step like moving to a new city, traveling abroad, or starting something new? Use this Hora chart as one timing layer alongside Panchang and event-specific checks.
Hora is a planetary-hour guide, not a complete Muhurat verdict. Major ceremonies still need Panchang, Lagna, and chart-specific review.
In Vedic Astrology, the day is not just 24 hours; it is a sequence of planetary reigns. The word **'Hora'** (from which the English word 'Hour' is derived) refers to a roughly 60-minute period ruled by one of the seven visible planets. By knowing which planet is ruling the current hour, you can align your actions with that planet's specific energy, turning every hour into a potential Muhurta.
"Time is a river, and the planets are the currents. Swim with the current, not against it."
A Vedic day (Sunrise to next Sunrise) is divided into 24 Horas. The first Hora of the day is always ruled by the Lord of the Weekday. For example, on Sunday, the first hour after Sunrise is the **Sun Hora**. On Monday, it is the **Moon Hora**.
The subsequent hours follow the descending order of planetary speed: Saturn (Slowest) -> Jupiter -> Mars -> Sun -> Venus -> Mercury -> Moon (Fastest). This cyclic order repeats throughout the day and night. Since the length of the day varies by season, a Hora is not exactly 60 minutes; it expands in summer and contracts in winter.
"Every hour has a flavor. Do not eat salt during the hour of sugar."
Each Hora carries the distinct DNA of its ruler. The **Sun Hora** (Surya) is best for applying for jobs, meeting officials, or political work. The **Moon Hora** (Chandra) is ideal for gardening, cooking, or emotional bonding. The **Mars Hora** (Mangal) is perfect for exercise, debates, or technical work but bad for peaceful negotiations.
The **Mercury Hora** (Budh) supports banking, learning, and communication. **Jupiter Hora** (Guru) is the 'Golden Hour' for spiritual initiation, marriage talks, or financial investments. **Venus Hora** (Shukra) favors romance, buying clothes, and artistic pursuits. **Saturn Hora** (Shani) is best for cleaning, hard labor, or rest; avoid starting new ventures here.
"When you cannot change the day, change the hour."
We cannot wait for a perfect date (Tithi or Nakshatra). We need to act *today*. This is where Hora shines. It provides actionable windows within the current day. Even on a generally 'bad' day, the Jupiter or Venus Hora provides a localized bubble of positive energy.
For example, if you must sign a contract on a Tuesday (Mars Day - usually aggressive), aim for the Mercury or Jupiter Hora to inject wisdom and logic into the agreement. If you need to have a difficult conversation, avoid the Mars Hora and wait for the Moon or Venus Hora to soften the blow.
"The sun rules the day, the moon rules the night, but the planets rule the hours."
The calculation of Hora is split into two blocks: **Day Horas** (Diwa) from Sunrise to Sunset, and **Night Horas** (Ratri) from Sunset to Sunrise. There are 12 Horas in each block.
Our calculator computes the exact length of the day (Dinamaan) and divides it by 12 to find the precise duration of a Day Hora for your city. Similarly, the night length (Ratrimaan) is divided by 12 for the Night Horas. This precision is why our tool is superior to standard clock-time charts which assume a generic 6:00 AM sunrise.
"Timing is the secret ingredient of effective prayer."
Hora is also a potent tool for **Upayas** (Remedies). If you have a weak planet in your birth chart (e.g., weak Mercury affecting speech), performing remedies during the **Mercury Hora** amplifies their effect. Chanting the Budh Mantra during Budh Hora is like tuning your radio to the exact frequency of the station you want to hear.
Similarly, donations for Saturn (Shani Daan) are traditionally associated with Saturn Hora on Saturdays. Lighting a lamp for Venus during the Venus Hora on Fridays is a devotional timing practice, not a guarantee of relationship results.
"The names of the days are not myths; they are astronomical facts encoded in language."
Beyond the standard seven planets, some advanced systems consider the nodes (Rahu/Ketu) or 'Kala' (Time) as rulers of specific sub-periods. However, the classical **Hora Shastra** focuses on the visible spectrum. The sequence is derived from the outer orbits (Saturn) moving inward to the Earth/Moon.
The first Hora of the day is the strongest. The ruling planet of the first Hora sets the tone for the entire day. This is why the days of the week are named after them (Sunday = Sun Hora at sunrise, Monday = Moon Hora at sunrise). Understanding this foundational rhythm connects you to the heartbeat of the solar system.
Understanding planetary hours.
They serve different purposes. Choghadiya is a rougher, broader guide (1.5 hours) categorizing time as simply Good/Bad. Hora is more specific (1 hour) and qualitative (Energy Type). Use Choghadiya for quick checks; use Hora for specific tasks (e.g., 'I need Mercury energy for this email').
Generally, Saturn Hora is avoided for auspicious beginnings (Mangalik Karya) because Saturn represents delay. However, it is excellent for laying foundations, buying land, or starting long-term discipline habits like a diet or study routine.
Yes. Hora depends on Local Sunrise. If you fly from New Delhi to London, the Hora schedule shifts completely because the sun rises hours later. Always use our location-based calculator when traveling.
In winter or at high latitudes, day hours are short. A Hora might only be 45 minutes long. This means the planetary energy shifts faster. You have a smaller window to act. Conversely, in summer, you have a wider window.
No. Mars Hora is 'Bad' for negotiation and peace, but 'Good' for action, surgery, sports, and technical repairs. It is high-energy. If you need courage, use the Mars Hora. Context is everything.
